I am searching for information on John Schumann, Santa Barbara fisherman and spotter pilot. I am an old friend of his and I lost track of him. I have seen an "In Memoriam" for a John Schumann in the American Albacore Association website and I'm afraid it may be him. I would very much appreciate if someone that knew/know him would contact me so that I can put my doubts to rest. I can email some photograph for identification if necessary.

This is important to me. I have tried to contact the American Albacore Association with little success and I don't know where else to look. I would be very thankful if someone could provide me with some information.

Thank you

Now we are considering getting seafood from you for a family event early September.

Dear David Kushner,
Thank you for your talk this evening. I met you at the end. I am a PADII-certified open water scuba diver, Ecological/Water/Civil Engineer, and Science Teacher. I have taken courses in the use of GPS, AutoCAD, and GIS. I am off from June 18th through August 15th and would like to work/learn/volunteer with kelp-forest and other coastal marine or fresh-water aquatic ecosystems. Who would you recommend I contact?

Sincerely,

Hi Jeff,

Great questions. There are three different kinds of seafood sustainability programs: 1. the focused aspect (ex: “Dolphin safe” – focus on single species); 2. seafood guide (ex: Monterey Aquarium Seafood guide and Fishwise – (red/yellow/green rating)); and 3.certification (ex: Marine Stewardship Council Certification (MSC) or KRAV out of Sweden). The focused aspect is the least stringent, and CFSB and other CA entities would like to seek certifications that go beyond all of these programs. I don't think there are any 'bunk' programs out there...there are just programs that are more detailed wtih more strict regulations and protocols than others.

Fishwise and Seafood Watch are similar programs, the difference being Fishwise is a bit more detailed on why a fishery is either green, yellow or red (Green = Best Choice; Yellow = Good Alternative; Red = Avoid eating). For example: the CA sea urchin is "Yellow" on the Seafood Watch program. Fishwise considers CA sea urchin a sustainable fishery and a good food choice, but it is "Yellow" because there is no formal stock assessment on that fishery.

The consumer is for sure confused, and rightfully so. There are some restaurants out there who are told from their distributor that all of their fish is 'sustainable.' There is 'halibut' that comes from China labeled as halibut, but it is not halibut. It is a flatfish that kind of looks like halibut, and is farmed in China so there is a high load of mercury in the fish. At the present moment the best way to know that you are eating sustainable is to know where to buy the fish directly from the boat. An earlier link on the CFSB website shared where you can get sustainable seafood in SB: http://cfsb.info/forum/?p=817. There is also a fishermen's market near the breakwater on Saturday mornings and the Oxnard Farmer's Market sells fresh sustainable seafood right from the boat on Sundays.

At this time MSC probably has the most strict rules for sustainable seafood. MSC has independent contractors that "audit" each fishery to determine its sustainability.

The state of CA is in the process of creating an even more stringent protocol for CA sustainable seafood. It is called the California Sustainable Seafood Initiative (CSSI). CFSB has a representative on the advisory panel to help make decisions on how the program will evolve. CSSI aims to fill in the gaps where MSC is missing. The advisory panel is also discussing how smaller fisheries who are unable to afford proper sustainable labels, can acquire a sustainable label without going broke with the formal process. CSSI next meeting is in August, and the public can attend. Keep an eye out on the CFSB website to find out when and where the next meeting will be held.

Feel free to ask any other questions,

Dear Moderator,

Stephanie,

What is the difference in seafood sustainability programs, how many are there and whose is considered the most prestigious. Are there any Bunk ones out there?
For example what is the difference between 'Fish Wise" and "Seafood watch" from MBRI. Is the customer confused about whom to believe and could anyone think of a trick name and a marketing program for their sustainability initiative.
Central Coast Seafood uses FIsh Wise. I have never heard of them before.
What organization is the ultimate arbiter of sustainability and who rates the raters?
Thanks,
Jeff
